Belly Dancing by MicheleBelly dance is a Western term for a traditional Egyptian dance form. Some American devotees refer to it simply as "Middle Eastern Dance." In the Egyptian Arabic language it is known as raqs sharqi (literally "oriental dance") or sometimes raqs baladi (literally "dance of country", and so "national" or "folk" dance). The term "raqs sharqi" may have originated in Egypt. The term "belly dance" is a creation of Orientalism, first used in English in 1899, and translating in French to "danse du ventre". Michele started dancing professionally in 2006 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Studied Raqs Sharqi & Cabaret styles. Performances can include veil, beledi & khaleegy rhythms with zills, folk with cane, and balancing routines using swords and baskets. Michele has authored and performed choreography at private parties, local events and restaurants and is accomplished in solo and group performances.
